<text>15 March, 2020
Things are not looking better for us. There is talk going around that everything will be shut down starting Wednesday. I imagine grocery stores, gas stations, and things like that will stay open, but rumor has it that stores, restaurants, etc. will all be closed. Perhaps I will not get to work after all. If this whole thing is an elaborate plot, then I do not see what the endgame is. Divert attention? Destabilize? Prove the superiority of online shopping?
The CDC has advised against any gatherings of 50+ people. I don’t know what to expect when I go back to the apartment. Will I be greeted by a ghost town? It’s still hard to believe this whole thing is actually happening. No more than a few weeks ago my friends and I were all in a classroom joking about the virus. Now, it’s grinding our country to a complete standstill. In just a weekend, it’s like everything has changed. One thing’s for sure, if they do shut down everything, I’m going to be incredibly bored. I should be using all of my downtime to do research for a project which is still due, but I can’t seem to motivate myself to do it. Speaking of school, I need to figure out how I’m going to apply for student teaching. I hope this whole thing won’t cause any setback for me.
I feel as if this journal is terribly devoid of emotion. I guess because the disease has not affected me or anyone close to me, I really don’t have much to say about it. I’m completely over my cold, so I feel safe going out again. I don’t know what the point will be when everything’s shut down though. I’m still seeing my Girlfriend. She’s honestly the best thing to have happened to me amidst all this. I enjoy talking to her, and learning more about her. If it weren’t for her, I’d be unbearably lonely. All of my friends are miles away. I wish it were normal again. I could go back to school, see all of my friends, get into a bit of trouble, the things someone my age should be doing. I guess you never realize what the world has to offer you until it isn’t there anymore. I’m also curious about how this will affect the election. Despite my best hopes, people are starting to politicize the whole thing. Each side is criticizing the others efforts to stop the spread. I guess that’s how politicians work though.
The funniest thing is, I had a feeling that something wasn’t right this semester. I had a gut feeling that something about this semester just didn’t feel like the past ones. Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but maybe the universe was telling me to be on my guard. Probably not. I’m not one for superstitious nonsense. All of these people who think this signifies the end of days it fulfills some ancient prophecy have spent far too much time buried in a bible, so to speak.

<text>Ironically, COVID-19 has given many of my friends more time to socialize with one another. Several of us have used the program "Discord" to communicate for a long time now, through text and voice chat, but after COVID-19 forced us all to stay inside most of the time, everyone has gotten on.

Now, almost every night, there are 3-8 of us talking, sharing stories, pictures, videos, etc., because most of us have more time to do that because we aren't working. Many of us are still doing homework or working from home, but we are able to chat while getting those done.

Before the pandemic, several of us were playing Dungeons and Dragons about once every 2 or 3 weeks, whenever we could all be available. Now, we play several nights a week, over discord, and we are quickly getting used to this new method of "hanging out". It's not something we want to do forever, and we do miss seeing each other in person, but it is nice to have more spare time to do things like this.

We all want to get outside, but having time off of work and with very little else to do has allowed us to connect more in a way, and to really dig into one of our hobbies.</text>

<text>As I write this, it has been one month since Washington County’s lockdown began. It feels so much longer. My world has been changed so much since this whole thing began.

The biggest difference is at work. Everyone has to wear masks, and they’ve had to change the whole layout of the kitchen to maintain “social distancing." We are getting better at it, but the new setup is clunky, inefficient, and confusing. No more than one person at a time is allowed in the break room or the office, so some people have to go elsewhere to take a lunch break. The dining room feels so lonely and cold without the voices of families and friends.

It has been a month since I have seen any of my own friends. We videochat and text, but it’s not the same. It doesn’t feel as real. I miss face to face conversation, I miss handshakes and hugs. I haven’t held my girlfriend in my arms in a month. This is the most painful part of the lockdown. The loneliness.

I have learned quite a few new hobbies, and re-examined some old ones. I can now shoot a coin by snapping my finger, my piano and violin skills have improved, I’ve bettered my Spanish and started learning Irish. I’ve been going to the shooting range and improving my accuracy and draw technique with my pistol. It’s not much, but it helps prevent every single day from becoming monotonous.

One of the most hated things for me is the online classes. Discussion boards and powerpoints can only do so much. They will never replace conversation, authentic discussion, face to face interaction, laughter, and teamwork. I struggle to learn anything, and it feels like I’m just meeting deadlines. With work, it’s hard to keep up with everything, and no matter how many reminders I set, I always miss something. I just wish the whole semester was a pass for everyone, and that I could get on with my life and education when this is all over. I hate to think of what my student teaching will be like if this continues.

In terms of politics, I’m not sure who to believe anymore. Both sides seem to have lost sight of reality, making plans and statements based off the fantasies in their head. They fight constantly, bickering back and forth while people suffer. I’m beginning to lose faith in them for any help. Perhaps the power lies with the people, and not politicians.

I want it to end. I want this whole thing to end, so that we can put it behind us like a bitter chapter in a book. I want this whole situation to be only a distant memory in a history book rather than having to live it as my reality. I want to snap my fingers and have the whole thing be lifted, but I know that’s just wishful thinking. I accept that this lockdown is for the good of the people, and I care more about the people than the politicians. In the people lies the strength to succeed, to overcome, to cure, and to comfort</text>

Interestingly enough, this group of people was not my typical friend group and they came into my life at a very interesting point. I captured this photo as we watched the sunset over the Mckay Education building parking lot on 4/20/2020. The entire day was full of sunshine and good energy and I knew when I saw that scene through my eyes it was a moment I never wanted to forget. This period of lockdown has been a time of reflection, growth, and new relationships.

<text>Over the recent months of 2020 the world has come to a halt to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. As many of us sit confined in our homes we may be distanced from our favorite places, activities, and people. Feelings of stress and depression can emerge as we wonder when everything will return to normal. In these photographic works I captured images of birds attracted to a feeder just off my porch. The images, all taken on the same tree show various species of birds coming and going to feed on seed.

I’ve attempted to capture the hustle and bustle of the natural world as it moves around this one location. Birds come and go as does the sun and clouds. The works capture the dynamic beauty of nature even in one single spot. Life may feel a bit stagnant now but rest assured; the world is still moving out there, it is still beautiful, and it will be there to enjoy when we return to normalcy.</text>
